The Intel i960RP Microprocessor contains an i960JF embedded CPU, a PCI-to-PCI bridge, and PCI interfaces for the i960JF, all on a single chip. On the ISE board, the i960RP is given exclusive access to 512KBytes of FLASH memory and 4 MBytes of DRAM.
The flash memory is large enough to hold bootstrap code, application code, and FPGA images for the Configurable Image Processor and Image Memory Controller. The flash is not intended to run code, however. Although as configured the i960RP will start executing out of the flash, it is not fast enough for typical operations and a bootstrap loader is expected to copy code into DRAM.
The i960RP also has in its local memory space some control registers for the rest of the ISE board. The PRSNT# signals from all the daughter cards, and FPGA configuration signals for the CIP and memory bus DMA controller are among the bits available on the i960RP local memory space.
